Honshu

Use Japan's incredible rail network to explore 4 of Honshu's ski resorts.

3 Days Arai Resort
Arai is a small, high end resort in Niigata that gets buried with snow. It is known for huge snowfall, very few crowds, and a quiet, refined feel. The whole place is built around one main hotel with good restaurants and an onsen, so everything is easy. The snowpack is deep and storms roll through often. Best for intermediate and advanced skiers.

3 Days Shiga Kogen
Shiga Kogen is the biggest ski area in Japan with 21 connected resorts all on one lift pass. After the smaller feel of Arai it feels huge. There are more than 80 runs spread across different zones, from beginner slopes to proper black terrain. Because it sits at high altitude the snow stays good late in the season. You can ski a different area each day and still not see it all.

3 Days Zao Onsen
Zao is famous for the snow monsters. Trees get coated in wind blown ice and snow, which makes the upper mountain look surreal when you ski through it. The resort spreads across a wide ridge with skiing on both sides of the mountain. The upper area around the snow monsters is the highlight, while the lower mountain has plenty of long intermediate runs.

3 Days Nekoma
Nekoma is small but skis bigger than it looks. It sits in Fukushima’s Urabandai region and gets a lot of snow with almost no crowds. It feels very local and simple. People come here to ski powder, not for a big resort experience. Expect quiet lifts, deep snow, and a few strong days of skiing.
