Snowbird Overview
Snowbird is a world-class ski and snowboard resort located in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, just 45 minutes from Salt Lake City. Famous for its deep powder, steep terrain, and long ski season (often stretching from November into May), Snowbird is a dream destination for advanced skiers and snowboarders. With a base elevation of 2,365 metres and receiving over 13 metres of snow annually, it offers some of the most challenging and exciting terrain in North America. Snowbird is also home to the iconic Aerial Tram, taking riders 880 metres up to Hidden Peak for breathtaking views and immediate access to big-mountain skiing.
Where to Stay at Snowbird
Snowbird offers ski-in, ski-out lodging options right at the resort base, perfect for those wanting to stay close to the action:
The Cliff Lodge – Snowbird’s flagship hotel, featuring a rooftop spa, outdoor heated pool, and multiple dining venues.
The Lodge at Snowbird – family-friendly accommodation with kitchens and fireplaces.
Iron Blosam Lodge – condo-style lodging great for extended stays or groups.

Alternatively, stay in Salt Lake City or Sandy for more hotel choices and budget-friendly options, with daily ski buses available.
Skiing & Snowboarding
Snowbird boasts 1,012 hectares of skiable terrain across steep bowls, glades, chutes, and wide-open groomers. The resort is famous for its big-mountain terrain, making it a paradise for advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders. Thanks to the Aerial Tram, skiers can reach the top in minutes for access to iconic runs like Regulator Johnson and Cirque Traverse. Beginners will find learning terrain near Baby Thunder, but Snowbird is best known for its steeps and powder-filled backcountry gates. Snowboarding is allowed at Snowbird, making it a great alternative to neighbouring Alta.
Getting Around
Snowbird’s base area is compact and walkable. Free shuttles connect lodging and lifts. From Salt Lake City or Sandy, the UTA Ski Bus provides reliable service up Little Cottonwood Canyon. If driving, be prepared for 4WD or snow chains during storms, as road closures are common in heavy snowfall.
Getting to Snowbird
Fly from Australia into Salt Lake City International Airport (via Los Angeles, Dallas, or San Francisco). From the airport, it’s a 45-minute transfer by shuttle, rental car, or shared ski bus up Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird. Booking a shuttle in advance is recommended, especially after fresh snow.
Top things to do in Winter
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Snowbird offers plenty of winter fun:
Relax at The Cliff Spa with rooftop hot tubs and mountain views.
Ride the Aerial Tram for incredible photo ops—even if you’re not skiing.
Try heli-skiing with Wasatch Powderbird Guides for ultimate powder access.
Snowshoe tours and guided backcountry experiences.
Ice skating and tubing available nearby in Salt Lake City.
Dining & Après
Snowbird offers a vibrant après-ski scene with both casual and upscale options:
The Tram Club: a lively spot for beers, wings, and pool tables.
SeventyOne: retro-inspired dining with craft cocktails and hearty meals.
Aerie Restaurant: fine dining at The Cliff Lodge with mountain views and an extensive wine list.
The Forklift: slope-side casual eatery perfect for lunch or après bites.
Après at Snowbird is more energetic than Alta, making it ideal for those wanting a fun, social vibe after skiing.
