Experience the Magic of a White Christmas in Canada
Dreaming of a white Christmas? Canada delivers the magic
Picture snow-covered trees, charming mountain villages glowing with twinkling lights and festive decorations around every corner. While an Aussie Christmas has its own charm and usually a great barbeque, I truly believe everyone should experience a white Christmas at least once in their lifetime! Having been lucky enough to live in both Banff and Whistler, I’ve experienced Christmas in each destination first-hand. If you're wondering whether Banff or Whistler is the better choice for your family Christmas in Canada, here's my honest comparison.
Spend Christmas in Whistler
Whistler
Whistler is home to the largest ski resort in North America, making it a dream destination for families who love to ski. Two amazing mountains both with ski-in ski out access, there’s no shortage of terrain to discover. I spent countless days skiing during my season in Whistler, and I still feel like I only scratched the surface. The sheer size of the resort is incredible!
At Christmas, Whistler is at its most vibrant. The village comes alive with bustling restaurants, excited skiers and snowboarders, a mix of happy travelers and locals soaking up the holiday atmosphere. There's a real energy in the air, making every walk through the village feel magical.
Beyond the slopes, there are plenty of family-friendly winter activities, including:
• Dog sledding
• Ziplining
• Snowmobiling
• Vallea Lumina, an interactive light show, a favourite among many travelling families
Another major advantage is convenience. Families can stay in the village and walk almost everywhere. Accommodation, restaurants, shops and activities are all within easy reach, making it easy to enjoy quality time together without worrying about driving, parking or car rentals.
People return to Whistler year after year, and it's easy to see why!
Whistler is perfect for:
• Families who prioritise skiing and snowboarding
• Ski-in ski-out convenience
• A vibrant mountain village atmosphere
• Easy access to winter activities
Spend Christmas in Banff and Lake Louise
Fairmont Banff Springs
Banff truly is a town like no other. It remains the most beautiful place I've ever lived and at Christmas, it feels even more magical. Towering Cascade Mountain provides a breathtaking backdrop to the main street, with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and Christmas trees on top of lampposts, it’s a scene straight out of a movie. For families wanting the full white Christmas experience, Banff delivers in every way.
Banff offers access to three ski mountains, all within 45 minutes of town, making it an excellent base for a family ski holiday. What sets Banff apart, is the variety of activities available beyond skiing.
Families can enjoy:
• Bowling
• The Cinema
• Museums
• Shopping
• A huge range of restaurants
• Banff's festive Christmas Markets
One of my favourite memories from Banff Christmases was visiting the Christmas Markets at the old train station. The combination of local stalls, delicious food and some of the best hot chocolates I've ever tasted perfectly captured the festive spirit.
If you're looking to create the ultimate family Christmas in Canada, the Fairmont Banff Springs takes festive magic to another level.
The family Christmas offerings are truly unmatched, think:
• Handwritten letters from Santa
• Festive Workshops
• Cooking decorating
• Visits from Santa
Combined with the stunning Christmas decorations throughout the hotel, every corner feels magical. It’s also where I saw the largest Christmas tree of my life, and my camera roll was quickly filled with photos simply by walking through the hotel.
Is there a Winner?
Whistler and Banff both have special places in my heart and are truly incredibly destinations. I’m not meant to choose a favourite, but if you’re searching for a magical family Christmas, my pick would be Banff. From its breathtaking mountain scenery and festive atmosphere to the wide range of activities beyond skiing, it offers something for every member of the family. Whether you're enjoying the towns Christmas magic, or making memories together on and off the slopes, Banff goes above and beyond to create an unforgettable holiday experience.
